Europe time zone overlap with India teams: how many hours you really share
Exact working-hour overlap between India and Lisbon, London, Paris, Berlin and Helsinki in winter and summer, plus the daily rhythm that makes the gap useful.
A European company shares between 4.5 and 7.5 working hours a day with an India-based team, depending on the city and the season. India (IST, UTC+5:30) does not change clocks, while most of Europe moves its clocks twice a year, so the overlap grows by an hour in summer. Germany and France share about 5.5 hours in winter and 6.5 in summer.
- India is 5.5 hours ahead of London and 4.5 hours ahead of Paris in winter, and one hour less in summer, because India does not observe daylight saving.
- Europe's clocks change on the last Sunday of March and October, so the overlap shifts twice a year.
- With a 10:00 to 19:00 IST day and 09:00 to 17:00 European hours, overlap ranges from 4.5 hours (UK winter) to 7.5 hours (Finland summer).
- Early India hours produce work before Europe wakes up, so Europe starts the day with progress.
- A fixed overlap call plus written handoffs works better than trying to stretch everyone's day.

What is the time difference between Europe and India?
India uses IST, UTC+5:30, all year. Europe has three standard zones: Western European Time (UTC+0, Portugal, the UK, Ireland), Central European Time (UTC+1, Germany, France, Netherlands, Spain, Italy and most others) and Eastern European Time (UTC+2, Finland, Greece, Romania and others). Each moves forward one hour in summer. The EU harmonizes the changeover dates through Directive 2000/84/EC, which sets them as the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October. In 2026 clocks went back on 25 October, and they go forward on 28 March 2027.
That leaves the gap between India and a European city as follows.
| Zone | Example cities | Gap in winter | Gap in summer |
|---|---|---|---|
| WET / WEST | Lisbon, London, Dublin | 5.5 hours | 4.5 hours |
| CET / CEST | Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid | 4.5 hours | 3.5 hours |
| EET / EEST | Helsinki, Athens, Bucharest | 3.5 hours | 2.5 hours |
The gap is how far India is ahead. The abbreviation "IST" is also used for Irish Standard Time, so write UTC offsets in calendar invites to avoid confusion.
How many working hours do you share?
Assume the India team works 10:00 to 19:00 IST and the European team works 09:00 to 17:00 local. The overlap runs from the European start to the India end.
| Zone | Season | European 09:00 in IST | Shared window (IST) | Shared hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WET | Winter | 14:30 | 14:30 to 19:00 | 4.5 |
| WEST | Summer | 13:30 | 13:30 to 19:00 | 5.5 |
| CET | Winter | 13:30 | 13:30 to 19:00 | 5.5 |
| CEST | Summer | 12:30 | 12:30 to 19:00 | 6.5 |
| EET | Winter | 12:30 | 12:30 to 19:00 | 6.5 |
| EEST | Summer | 11:30 | 11:30 to 19:00 | 7.5 |
Notice what happens in the morning. At 09:00 CET it is already 13:30 in Mumbai, so the India team has been working for three and a half hours. Their first stretch gives you finished tasks, pull requests and test results waiting when your day begins.
What does a good daily rhythm look like?
A rhythm beats a perfect overlap. A pattern that works for a Central European team looks like this.
- Morning, India (before Europe wakes). Heads-down build time. Output is posted with notes before 08:00 CET.
- Early European morning. Founders and product owners read the update, comment and answer questions in writing.
- Overlap call. One short call to unblock decisions, for example at 14:00 IST, which is 09:30 CET in winter and 10:30 CEST in summer.
- Afternoon, both sides. Pairing, reviews and demos for the busiest days.
- End of India day. A written handoff, with what shipped, what is blocked and what Europe should decide.
Start the week with a planning call and end it with a demo. For more habits that keep distributed teams fast, read working across time zones and, for UK and US cities, US and UK time zone overlap with India teams.
What if you need more overlap?
You can shift the India day. A team that works 11:00 to 20:00 IST adds an hour of overlap for Europe and costs the India side an evening. Many teams choose a flexible start with a fixed overlap window of three or four hours, so people can protect their own schedule. If you plan on-call support, rotate it and agree on compensation instead of expecting a standing night shift.
Consider the weeks when clocks differ between regions. The US and Europe change on different dates, so a three-way call between New York, Berlin and Mumbai needs checking in March and October to November.
Put UTC offsets and the changeover dates in the project calendar on day one. Much "the call moved" confusion comes from the weeks when US and European clocks disagree.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours does Germany share with an India team?
About 5.5 hours in winter and 6.5 hours in summer, with a 10:00 to 19:00 IST day and 09:00 to 17:00 German hours.
Does India observe daylight saving time?
No. IST is UTC+5:30 all year, so the overlap changes only when Europe changes its clocks.
Is the time zone gap a problem for agile teams?
Not if the team uses written updates, a short daily overlap and clear owners. Teams that rely on constant live conversation will feel it.
Which European city has the best overlap?
Helsinki and Athens, because the time difference is smallest. Lisbon and London have the least overlap in winter.
A short close
Four to seven shared hours are enough for a well-run team. What decides success is how clearly you write, decide and hand off, not the clock.
