How to measure AI search visibility and referral traffic in GA4
Measure ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI visibility with a prompt panel, GA4 referral data, Search Console, and qualified enquiries.
Measure AI search visibility with four connected views: citations across a fixed prompt panel, AI referral sessions in GA4, Google generative search performance in Search Console, and qualified enquiries. No single visibility score can tell you whether an AI mention created business value. This guide shows what to track and how to avoid false precision.
- Use a fixed set of buyer questions to compare citations and brand mentions over time.
- Create an AI assistants channel group in GA4 to separate identifiable referrals from general traffic.
- Some AI visits lose referral information and appear as direct traffic, so GA4 is a partial view.
- Track cited URLs and answer accuracy, not only whether the brand name appeared.
- Connect visibility to engaged sessions, key events, and qualified enquiries.
- Nactore measures discovery and conversion as one build, ship, rank, and grow system.
Define what AI visibility means for the business
An AI answer can mention a company without linking it. It can cite a page without naming the company in the main answer. It can also send a visit that never becomes an enquiry. These are different outcomes and should not be combined into one unexplained score.
Start with a measurement ladder.
| Level | Question | Useful metric |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Can the platform retrieve the page? | Successful crawler response and index status |
| Visibility | Does the business appear for a relevant question? | Mention rate across a fixed prompt panel |
| Citation | Does the answer link a Nactore page? | Citation rate and cited URL |
| Visit | Does a person reach the site? | AI referral sessions and landing pages |
| Engagement | Does the visitor use the page? | Engaged sessions and key events |
| Pipeline | Does the visit create a real opportunity? | Qualified enquiries and assisted conversions |
The order matters. If the page is inaccessible, content changes will not solve the first problem. If citations rise but enquiries do not, the landing page or question set may be attracting the wrong audience.
Build a stable AI prompt panel
A prompt panel is a small, repeatable set of questions that represent how buyers research the category. Include commercial, comparison, branded, and educational intent. Keep the wording and test conditions stable enough to make monthly changes interpretable.
- Choose 15 to 30 questions. Use sales calls, Search Console queries, proposal discussions, and customer language.
- Assign one intent to each question. Separate awareness prompts from questions that suggest a purchase.
- Record the environment. Note platform, date, market, account state, and whether web search was active.
- Capture the answer. Save mentions, linked citations, cited domains, and factual errors.
- Repeat monthly. Use the same core panel, and keep experimental questions in a separate group.
Do not call a single answer a ranking. Generated responses can vary between runs, users, locations, and product versions. The panel is a directional sample.

Track AI assistant referrals in GA4
Create an AI assistants channel
In GA4, open the Traffic acquisition report and inspect Session source / medium. Google's Traffic acquisition documentation explains that session-scoped source dimensions identify the publisher or platform associated with a visit.
Google now documents an AI assistants custom channel group. An Editor or Administrator can create one under Admin, Data display, Channel groups. Add a channel named AI assistants, match known assistant source values with a tested regular expression, and place it above the general Referrals channel so the more specific rule runs first.
Include sources observed in your own property rather than assuming every product uses one permanent hostname. Common labels can contain names such as ChatGPT, OpenAI, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, or Copilot. Review the unfiltered source report regularly and update the rule when a verified source appears.
Preserve the raw source report. A channel group is useful for the dashboard, while the underlying source and landing-page rows are what help you diagnose a real change.
Know what GA4 misses
Referral reporting is incomplete. A platform may attach a source, send a documented UTM parameter, omit referrer data, open a browser that strips context, or produce no visit at all. OpenAI states that ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links in supported search experiences, but that does not make every ChatGPT-originated visit identifiable.
Some unattributed sessions will appear as (direct) / (none). Google's direct traffic guidance lists missing referral information, redirects, link handling, and privacy tools among the reasons attribution can be lost.
Use GA4 to answer specific questions.
- Which assistants sent identifiable sessions? Compare session source and medium.
- Which pages received those visits? Add landing page as a secondary dimension.
- Did visitors engage? Review engaged sessions, average engagement time, and useful events.
- Did they act? Mark form submissions, booked calls, or other qualified actions as key events.
Do not estimate all AI traffic by multiplying the visible referrals with an invented factor. Report what is observed and state the limitation.
Measure Google AI visibility in Search Console
Google says its generative AI features use its core Search systems and recommends using the Generative AI performance report in Search Console where available. Review impressions, clicks, queries, pages, and changes over time alongside the standard search reports.
Search Console and GA4 answer different questions. Search Console shows how Google exposed and sent traffic from search experiences. GA4 shows what identifiable visitors did after reaching the site. Neither measures brand mentions inside ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity, which is why the prompt panel remains necessary.
Use URL-level data to improve a page. A page receiving impressions but few clicks may need a better title or closer intent match. A page cited in prompts but sending no visits may still influence discovery, but its business value should be described carefully.
Build one monthly GEO scorecard
A useful monthly review fits on one page and keeps raw data available behind it.
| Section | Report this month | Compare with |
|---|---|---|
| Organic | Indexed pages, non-branded impressions, clicks | Prior month and trailing three months |
| Prompt panel | Mentions, citations, cited Nactore URLs, factual errors | Same prompts and platforms |
| AI referrals | Sessions, engaged sessions, landing pages | Prior month and source mix |
| Conversion | Key events and qualified enquiries | Traffic source and landing page |
| Actions | Three page or authority improvements | Named owner and due date |
Keep the raw prompt answer, citation URL, and GA4 row behind every summary. This makes the report auditable and stops the team from optimizing an unexplained score.
Turn the data into content decisions
Measurement should change the work. Use each pattern to choose the next action.
- Not retrieved. Check indexation, crawler access, internal links, sitemap dates, and server responses.
- Retrieved but not cited. Improve the direct answer, evidence, specificity, and fit for the question.
- Cited but not named. Clarify the entity and connect the evidence to the business accurately.
- Named but not linked. Strengthen the page that best supports the claim and earn relevant external references.
- Traffic without enquiries. Review intent, landing-page clarity, proof, and the next step.
The result is a content backlog based on observed gaps, not a calendar filled with disconnected keywords.
Frequently asked questions
Can GA4 show every visit from ChatGPT or Claude?
No. GA4 can report visits that preserve a recognizable source or campaign value. Some AI-originated visits can lose referral information and appear as direct traffic.
What is a good AI visibility score?
There is no universal benchmark. Build a baseline from the buyer questions that matter to your business, then track mentions, citations, accurate descriptions, traffic, and enquiries over time.
How often should AI prompts be checked?
Monthly is enough for a stable strategic panel. More frequent checks can help during a launch, but daily variation should not drive major content decisions.
Which GEO tool should I use?
Choose a tool that preserves prompts, answers, citations, locations, and historical comparisons. Validate its output manually and keep GA4 and Search Console as separate first-party evidence.
Measure the whole journey
AI visibility matters when the right buyer discovers a trustworthy answer and can take a useful next step. Nactore connects the crawler, content, measurement, website, and conversion path under one team, so visibility and business results are reviewed together.
