Website development company in India: a 15-point checklist before you hire
A 15-point checklist for hiring a website development company in India: scope, speed, SEO and AI search, DPDP consent, payments, accessibility, hosting and handover.
Before hiring a website development company in India, check fifteen things across five areas: scope and ownership, performance and search visibility, legal and privacy, payments and local integrations, and handover. A good partner answers each with evidence, not adjectives. This checklist works for Indian businesses and for foreign companies commissioning an Indian team.
- Fix the scope as pages, user journeys and integrations, and name who owns the domain, hosting and source code.
- Test the build on a mid-range phone on a mobile network, since many Indian visitors browse on phones.
- Your website must tell search engines and AI assistants who you are, so ask for structured data and a clear page for each service.
- Collect consent and publish a privacy notice that matches India's DPDP Act, and display the legal details Indian e-commerce rules require.
- Use licensed payment providers and support UPI if you sell to Indian customers.
- Nactore is an AI-native technology and growth company in Mumbai that ships websites with SEO and GEO built in, scoped to each client.
Scope and ownership: what should be settled first?
Most website disputes come from fuzzy scope and unclear ownership. Settle these before design starts.
- Pages and journeys. List every page type and the path a visitor takes to the goal, such as booking a call or buying a product. Prices and timelines follow from this list.
- Content responsibility. Decide who writes copy, who supplies images and who approves. Late content is the most common cause of delay.
- Ownership. The domain should be registered in your name. Hosting, analytics and the code repository should sit in accounts you control, with the vendor invited as a collaborator. Ask for a written assignment of the code, and see how to choose a software company in India for why that matters under Indian copyright law.
Performance and search: will people find it and will it load?
A website that is slow or invisible does no work, however well it looks.
- Mobile first. Test on an ordinary Android phone over a mobile connection, not on a developer laptop on office Wi-Fi.
- Core Web Vitals. Ask for measured results from Google's PageSpeed Insights or Search Console, with a target agreed in the contract.
- Search basics. Clean URLs, one clear H1 per page, sitemaps, canonical tags and fast server responses. Never change live URLs without redirects.
- AI assistant visibility. ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar tools cite pages that state facts plainly. Ask for structured data, FAQ sections where useful and a page per service. Our guide to what Generative Engine Optimization is explains the practice.
- Analytics. Set up conversion events from day one, so you can tell which pages produce enquiries.
Legal and privacy: what must an Indian website show?
Indian law touches websites in a few concrete ways.
- Consent and privacy notice. If you collect personal data through forms, cookies or analytics, you need a notice in plain language and a way to give and withdraw consent. The DPDP Rules, notified in November 2025, give an eighteen-month phased compliance period, so the DPDP Act duties apply from around May 2027. Build it now.
- E-commerce disclosures. The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 apply to online sellers and marketplaces. They require an e-commerce entity to display details such as its legal name, its address and the contact details of a grievance officer. Read the rules as published by the Department of Consumer Affairs and check with counsel for later amendments.
- Accessibility. Private sites are not bound by one single accessibility standard in India, but the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 supports accessible digital services, and Indian government sites follow the GIGW guidelines. Aim for WCAG 2.2 AA.
Payments and local integrations: what do Indian customers expect?
If you sell to Indian users, the checkout matters more than the homepage.
- UPI and licensed gateways. Use a payment aggregator authorised by the Reserve Bank of India. Never route customer money through an unlicensed account.
- GST invoices. If you are GST-registered, invoices must carry the required fields. Ask whether the system will generate compliant invoices automatically.
- Messaging. WhatsApp click-to-chat is often the preferred contact channel. Use the official WhatsApp Business platform if you automate replies.
Handover and maintenance: what happens after launch?
- Handover pack. Source code, deployment steps, credentials in your password manager, and a short runbook. A website you cannot update without the original vendor is a liability.
How do the options compare?
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| No-code builder | Simple brochure sites | Limited control over performance, schema and URLs |
| Template-based CMS | Content-heavy sites | Plugins add security and speed risk |
| Custom engineered site | Products, marketplaces, multi-country sites | Higher upfront effort, more control |
Pick the lightest option that meets your goal. A custom build is worth it when search, speed or integrations drive revenue.
Ask the vendor for the live scores of three sites they built, then run them yourself on PageSpeed Insights. It takes five minutes and tells you more than a portfolio page.
What do foreign companies need to add?
If you are outside India and commissioning an Indian team, add three items. Confirm the working-hours overlap, which is covered in US and UK time-zone overlap with India teams. Agree an invoice in your currency. And make sure the vendor can sign the data terms your own country requires.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a website build take?
It depends on page count, content readiness and integrations. A focused marketing site is a matter of weeks. A site with commerce, user accounts or multiple languages takes longer. Ask for a plan with dates tied to content approvals.
Should I pick WordPress or a custom stack?
WordPress suits content-led sites with a strong editorial team. A custom stack suits products and sites where speed and integrations matter. Either can rank well if built carefully.
Who should own the domain?
You should. Register it under your company's name and keep the registrar login with you. This is the most common thing buyers forget.
Do I need a separate site for each country?
Not always. One site with clear country sections often works, but see SEO and GEO for multi-country websites for when to separate.
Hire on evidence
The right website partner shows measured speed, clean search foundations, privacy handled in the build and a clean handover. Ask for those four items in the proposal.
