AI SEO vs SEO: what changes, what stays the same

Classic SEO and AI SEO side by side: goals, writing, crawlers and controls, and measurement, based on what Google and OpenAI publish about AI search.

By NactorePublished 30 Oct 2026All articles

Classic SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links. AI SEO aims to have your business named or quoted inside an AI-written answer, while still ranking. The foundations stay the same: Google says there are no extra requirements for its AI features beyond normal SEO best practice. What changes is how you write (direct answers and evidence matter more), which crawlers and controls you manage, and how you measure (you have to check the answers themselves, not only rankings).

Key takeaways
  • The goal shifts from "rank a link" to "be one of the sources an answer is built from", without giving up rankings.
  • Google says appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode needs no special optimization, and that traffic from those features is counted inside overall Search Console data.
  • ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler, which is controlled separately from GPTBot, the training crawler.
  • Direct answers, specific facts and named sources make content easier to quote.
  • Measurement needs a new step: asking the AI tools your buyers' questions and recording who gets named.
  • Nactore is a technology and growth company that runs SEO and AI SEO as one program on sites it can also engineer.

The short comparison

What stays the same

Google's guidance on AI features and your website is clear: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations necessary. You meet the technical requirements, follow Search policies and create helpful, reliable, people-first content.

Google's page on creating helpful content defines people-first content as content created primarily for people, not to manipulate rankings. That principle carries straight into AI search. If a page exists only to catch a keyword, an assistant has little reason to quote it.

So the basics do not move:

  • Pages must be crawlable, fast and correctly indexed.
  • Content must answer real questions better than the alternatives.
  • Other credible sites should confirm who you are and what you do.

What changes: how you write

AI answers are assembled from short passages. Content that is easy to quote has a few traits:

  1. The answer comes first. One or two sentences that fully answer the question, then the detail.
  2. Specifics beat adjectives. "Mumbai is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of Dubai" is quotable. "We offer great time zone overlap" is not.
  3. Sources are named. A fact with a link to the primary source gives the answer something to stand on.
  4. Comparisons are explicit. Tables and "X vs Y" sections match how buyers ask questions.
  5. Each page answers one main question. Mixed pages are harder to quote cleanly.

The 2023 GEO research paper that named Generative Engine Optimization tested content changes like these and reported visibility gains of up to 40% in generative engine responses for some methods. It is a research benchmark, not a guarantee, but it supports the direction.

What changes: crawlers and controls

In classic SEO you mostly think about Googlebot and Bingbot. AI SEO adds a few decisions:

  • ChatGPT search. OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is used for search and GPTBot for training, and each is set separately in robots.txt. You can allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search results while disallowing GPTBot. Changes can take about 24 hours to apply.
  • Google AI features. Google says AI is built into Search, so robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the control for how your site is crawled for Search. To limit what is shown from your pages, Google points to nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex.

Check your robots.txt and any firewall bot settings. Blanket "block all AI bots" rules can remove you from answers you want to appear in.

What changes: measurement

Google notes that sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, so those clicks show up in the numbers you already track, mixed in with normal results.

For other assistants there is no Search Console. The practical method is to:

  1. Write down 10 to 20 questions your buyers really ask.
  2. Ask each question in the main AI tools on a schedule, in a clean session.
  3. Record who is named, who is linked and what is said about you.
  4. Track visits from AI tools in your analytics, and the enquiries they bring.

Do you need two separate programs?

No. Running them separately duplicates work and creates conflicts, such as one team blocking crawlers the other depends on. One program with one set of buyer questions, one content plan and one report covers both. The difference is in the details: answer-first writing, explicit sources, crawler settings and answer tracking.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI search replace SEO?

No. Google describes AI as built into Search, and its guidance for AI features is the same foundational SEO practice. AI SEO extends SEO rather than replacing it.

Should I rewrite all my pages for AI?

Start with the pages that answer your buyers' most important questions. Put the answer first, add specifics and sources, and measure before rewriting more.

Is GEO the same as AI SEO?

They describe the same goal. GEO is the research term, AI SEO is what most buyers search for. Read what AI SEO is for the full picture.

Can I stop AI tools from using my content?

You can control crawlers in robots.txt and limit snippets with Google's preview controls. Blocking a search crawler can also keep you out of that tool's answers, so decide per crawler.

One program, two kinds of results

Classic rankings and AI answers reward the same fundamentals, with more weight on clear answers and evidence. Nactore runs AI SEO as part of building and growing your website, so the technical fixes and the content come from one place.
